Merry Christmas

Holy Mass tonight at midnight at St. Osmund's, Long Lane, Breightmet, Bolton. Many thanks to Fr. Hilton for this.

May I also take this opportunity to wish all members and friends a very happy Christmas and a happy new year.

Hodie Christus natus est, alleluia.

Last week saw the first regular Mass at St. Chad's following the movement of the community from Holy Nameto Cheetham Hill.

Please remember the new time (4.45 p.m.) and place.

Thursday, November 22, 2012

I left home on Thursday at 4.25 p.m. to reach Whalley Range for 7.00 p.m. Due to red lights and more red lights, 40 mph restrictions on the M62 for all of the last mile on it, driving rain and wind we reached the English Martyrs church at 7.27 p.m. This left me three minutes to get my cassock and cotta on and seize the thurible, which I had been asked to attend to when I was asked to step in for an absent member of the Salford team a couple of weeks ago.
There had been adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament earlier and the calm atmosphere and smell of incense calmed me almost immediately and the Mass began. The polyphonic piece which accompanied the entrance procession and subsequent mix of plainsong and polyphony was thoroughly entrancing and made for a profoundly spiritual occasion. The choir sang beautifully and Fr. Marlor executed the pace with acute reverence.
By the time we reached the epistle, the nightmare journey could have been a hundred years away. The return journey was a doddle.
Thanks to all concerned.

Sung Mass for the feast of Saint Cecilia

Thursday is the Feast of Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr. This feast will be commemorated with a sung Mass at 7.30 p.m. at English Martyrs, Alexandra Road South, Whalley Range, Manchester.

Friday, November 16, 2012

On Thursday (22nd November) we have a sung Mass at English Martyrs, Alexandra Road South, Whalley Range, Manchester at 7.30 p.m. It would be lovely to see a good attendance at this Mass.
Thanks to Fr. Marlor for making this occasion possible.

Next Sunday sees the last regular Extraordinary Rite Mass at Holy Name after many years. A new oratory is to be established at St. Chad's, Cheetham Hill and the Society of Jesus will take back control of the Holy Name from the First Sunday in Advent. When I was at University in Manchester the Jesuits were there and I still wake up in a cold sweat when I recall witnessing some of the "joyful" Folk Masses held there. I very occasionally attended this Mass and lots of Latin Masses with a friend and fellow undergraduate. He had not known the old Mass before this. He is now Father Michael McCarthy FSSP. Unfortunately I was too ill last year to attend his First Mass in this country. He was posted to America after ordination.
From the first Sunday in December there will be a traditional Mass every Sunday at 4.45 p.m. at St. Chad's. This Mass will be preceded by Vespers and Benediction at 4.00 p.m. Thanks to Fr. Matus and the new Oratorian Congregation for this. I wish them every success in their new community and

English Martyrs, pray for us.
St. Chad, pray for us.
St. Ignatius Loyola, pray for us.
St. Philip Neri, pray for us.

November at English Martyrs

A quick reminder that there is Mass every Saturday in this month of the Holy Souls at English Martyrs, Alexandra Road South, Whalley Range, Manchester.
This parish was home to one of my predecessors, Kevin Cave and I always think that Kevin is still praying away for his old parish or his prayers while he was here on earth have been answered.
Thanks again to Fr. Marlor and Bernard Richards.
